Privacy Practices for Donors and Supporters

Polaris values the privacy of its donors and supporters and is committed to protecting personal or otherwise sensitive information provided to us.  Polaris does not sell, trade or share donor or supporter information or mailing lists with any organizations or third parties.

Online Donations
Online donations are processed through a secure server operated by PayPal, a third-party vendor not owned by, or affiliated with, Polaris. Information provided by a donor through the online donation form will be accessible to PayPal in order to complete the transaction and, as indicated in PayPal’s privacy policy, is retained only as long as needed by PayPal to process the gift. PayPal states that it does not sell, trade or share personal or credit card information with any other third party.  To learn about how Paypal collects, stores, and secures your data, please visit Paypal’s privacy policy, available here.

Privacy Preferences
Polaris reserves the right to send updates, newsletters, and donation solicitations (“Communications”) via email or mailing addresses provided by a donor or supporter through our email sign-up sheet unless specific preferences are otherwise noted. Online Communications are facilitated through Salsa Labs, a third-party vendor not owned by, or affiliated with, Polaris. Read Salsa Labs Privacy Policy here.

Donors and supporters may change their communication preferences at any time, including by opting out of future Communications or by having their personal information deleted from our database. Change your privacy preferences here.

Privacy Practices Related to Tips and Hotline Information

Information We Collect
Polaris may collect limited demographic and geo-locational information in order to conduct our operations. Any such information retained is core to our evaluation of services provided to persons contacting the hotline. Personal or other sensitive information will only be shared with service providers who help us achieve our core operations. In addition, such service providers may only use such information for the purposes for which we engaged them.

Use of Information
In addition to providing services, Polaris may use Aggregate Information collected from cases reported to the NHTRC hotline and BEFREE textline to analyze trends, produce reports regarding such trends, or publish heat maps. “Aggregate Information” is information from which Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) has been removed and PII cannot be derived from any such Aggregate Information with reasonable efforts.

Digital Services

Opt-Out Policy
The National Human Trafficking Resource Center (“NHTRC”) gives users options for non-digital services when necessary and practical. Such choices include opting not to engage in digital services and opting not to provide Personally Identifiable Information during interactions with specialists. Users concerned that using digital services might threaten their physical safety or well-being are encouraged to contact the NHTRC at 1-888-373-7888.

Online Tips
Submitting a tip online via the Confidential Online Reporting form constitutes an agreement and understanding of privacy policy. We collect IP addresses in addition to any information completed on the form. Users concerned that using the Confidential Online Reporting might threaten their physical safety or well-being are encouraged to contact the NHTRC at 1-888-373-7888.

Text/SMS Tips
Polaris offers services through a text message short code. The messages are processed through a third-party vendor called Twilio. Twilio has more information about their privacy practices on their website. Textline advocates have access to inbound phone numbers. For your safety and privacy, we will never share this information without your consent, and we will never call you at the number you texted us from.

Users will be charged standard text messaging rates as required in their mobile device provider's plans. Any statement of charges or billing is in no way connected to NHTRC. Users should be aware and mindful that text messages sent using mobile devices may be saved indefinitely by mobile device providers and potentially could threaten their physical safety or well being if not handled securely by such providers.

Please make sure you are in a safe place when you text and we recommend that you delete your texts after ending the conversation. To delete text history: Access your messaging menu accessible from the Main Menu.  Go to Inbox which may be called Received Messages.  Select the message and hit "delete." Users concerned for their physical safety and well-being are encouraged to contact the NHTRC at 1-888-373-7888.

Notification of Policy Changes
Notification of any changes to the NHTRC or BEFREE privacy policies will be posted to the Polaris and National Human Trafficking Resource Center websites. We encourage frequent review of these websites.

Other Policies
For information about NHTRC procedures after receiving a tip or NHTRC’s confidentiality policy, please review Our Policies. Read more about the BEFREE textline procedures and confidentiality policy here.

All National Hotlines Staff serving the NHTRC and BEFREE hotline are required to sign a confidentiality policy.
