NEWARK, NJ – “Today, Governor Chris Christie signed a comprehensive piece of legislation that is a major step forward in New Jersey’s ability to fight human trafficking and support survivors of this crime. The Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection and Treatment Act (A. 3352/S. 2239) will make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable people whose rights and freedom have been stolen.
This bill allows victims of sex trafficking to remove unjust convictions from their criminal records that were a direct result of their exploitation, making it easier for them to rebuild their lives. It also helps victims access assistance by promoting the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline, provides witness protection to survivors who testify against their traffickers, and makes it easier for law enforcement to prosecute traffickers for their crimes.
“Governor Christie’s signature tells the survivors we work with every day that they are not alone. We thank Governor Chris Christie, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Senator Nellie Pou, all of the bill sponsors, Attorney General Jeffery Chiesa, and the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking for their support in helping more victims of human trafficking become survivors.”
