Voices from the Fields: Data Insights on Worker Vulnerabilities

Agricultural workers on U.S. farms are highly vulnerable to labor exploitation and trafficking. These briefs shine light on workers’ recruitment and employment conditions, and amplify their voices to providers, private-sector leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders striving to protect workers and strengthen supply chains.

The first brief presents an overview of Nonechka survey responses from more than 2,900 farmworkers employed in the U.S. from 2021-2024. Among the findings, 79% of respondents had experienced one type of potential force, fraud, or coercion in their workplace — situations ripe for abuse and trafficking.

The second brief focuses on the recruitment process, particularly for those holding H-2A temporary work visas. Sharing data from both Nonechka and the National Human Trafficking Hotline, the brief flags a number of recruitment practices that can put workers at risk for exploitation, even if the practices are legal or commonplace in the industry.
